  Power Rating Week 2

Hall County Football 2007 Power Rating
End of Week 2

At the end of week 2 the Hall County football players have created the following power ratings. As the season goes on I take into consideration the following criteria 1) Head to head competitions; 2) win/loss record; 3) ratio of points scored vs. points allowed; 4) opponents win/loss %... But this is week 1, just a small part on what the splendid young men who represent their schools on Friday night might do.

Following is a ranking from week 2’s performance,

Each week I look inside the stats of all teams, read newspaper accounts and talk to football people who have seen teams I have not seen yet and I always see at least one game.

As the season goes on, the power rating at the top will come down and the ones at the bottom will come up.

After studying football stats for 15 seasons in the National Football League and 8 seasons at Ohio State and William Mary we found some stats were more important than others. I try and highlight stats each week, the stats which have strong correlations with the final outcome of the game. The longer the season goes on and the more games which have been played, the more valid the statistics are for predicting future success.

1. North Hall (1-0-0) Average Points Scored 56: Average Points Allowed 0: Power Rating 56: Dominating Pickens County in every statistic the Trojans move up to number one in the power ratings. They are primarily a senior football team and few offensive lines in high school football execute the winged T offense better than these Trojans. A quick look at their effectiveness can be seen in the running stats – Hunter Wolf averaged 15.75 yards on 8 carries; Bobby Epps averaged 5.74 yards on 5 carries; Dylon Wolf averaged 18.5 on 2 carries; Fabian Jackson in addition to completing 3 passes in 3 attempts for 2 TDs also averaged 11.4 yards on 5 carries; and Sophomore Robert Humphrey averaged 9 yards a carry on 3 carries. As effective as the offense was the defense was just as dominating. The Trojan defense intercepted 4 passes, while allowing only 4 completions in 22 pass attempts. Allowing just 2.8 per carry the Trojan Defense owned the line of scrimmage. This fine senior football team is going to make the Brickyard a tough place to visit. Next Friday the Trojans play an undefeated and improving Johnson down in Oakwood.

2. Johnson (2-0-0) Average Points Scored 25.6: Average Points Allowed 3.5: Power Rating 7.29: Last season I saw Johnson improve every week and looks like they have started the 2007 on an upward trajectory. Johnson’s 35-0 victory over East Hall represents Coach Paul Friel’s first shutout since coming to Johnson at the beginning of the 2006 season. Holding the Vikings to 22 yards in 21 carries, the Knights completely dominated the line of scrimmage. The Knights pass defense picked off two interceptions and held the Vikings pass offense to 4.07 per pass attempt. Led by senior running back Seth Evans, who averaged 6.5 per carry on 20 carries and Freshman Mantevius Rucker, who added 86 yards on 14 carries, the Knights running game controlled the game and the time of possession. QB Bobby Wirshing added 62 yards to the rushing total while adding another 50 yards through the air. The Knight’s biggest test so far this season comes Friday night at home against the North Hall Trojans.

3. Flower Branch (2-0-0) Average Points Scored 31.5: Average Points Allowed 7: Power Rating 4.5: The Branch dominated an improved Gilmer County team this past weekend. Coach Shaw pulled his splendid QB Jaybo Shaw after one quarter, a quarter in which he completed 8 of 9 passes for 166 yards and 2 touchdowns. Playing much the game with younger players the score does reflect the complete domination showed this past Friday night. For the second week in a row Sophomore Darious Kimbrough lead the Falcons rushers averaging 7.5 yards per carry. The Branch’s very sound and effective defense was led by Senior linebacker Jimmy Smith, who led his team in tackles and was a disrupting force playing a good part of the game on Gilmer’s side of the line of scrimmage.

4. Gainesville (2-0-0) Average Points Scored 38: Average Points Allowed 9.5: Power Rating 4.00: It’s hard to figure this Red Elephant team out who had to come from behind to edge White County 21-19. White County’s defense was able to pick off three interceptions from the pass oriented Gainesville pass offense. Justin Fordham average 11.5 yards per pass attempt, which is a strong winning number. Fordham has three splendid targets in Gerald Ford, Tyler Adetona and Robby Heffinger. The Red Elephant offensive line has 4 sophomores starting who should get better and better as the season goes along. They have a good solid spread offense running game led by explosive Kendrick Harris. The Gainesville new 3-4 defense held White County to 2.7 yards per carry, a strong winning number. Like all upsets or near upsets it was Gainesville’s 5 turnovers which almost cost them the game.

5. Chestatee (1-0-0) Average Points Scored 41: Average Points Allowed 30: Power Rating 1.37: Open date last Friday – The War Eagles head to Dawsonville Friday night to play winless Dawson County.

6. West Hall (0-2-0) Average Points Scored 24.5: Average Points Allowed 42.5: Power Rating 0.58: West Hall has an improved offense this year, but they need to keep improving on defense. A new coach and a new system takes awhile to catch up. Last Friday the Spartans lost to undefeated Lumpkin County. Marquez Stephan had another good night averaging better than 6 yards a carry while his Fullback Running mate Dan Drummond averaged 5.3 yards. This improving Spartan Football team seeks their first win when White County visits West Hall next Friday night.

7. East Hall (0-2-0) Average Points Scored 0: Average Points Allowed 45: Power Rating 0.01): Yet to score their first touchdown, this very young Viking football team has been struggling against older and more mature football players. A new coach with many Freshman and Sophomores playing starting positions has been rough in the first two weeks of the 2007 season. It was not long ago when Chestatee and Flowery Branch were forced to play young players, many of these players have grown and matured to become some of the very best players in the County. I take my hat off to these young Vikings, these rough, competitive kids who will grow to be some of our future stars.
